Our client, a highly respected and extremely prestigious world leader in the oil and gas industry, is looking for a Legal Counsel to join their dynamic, multicultural and multilingual organisation in The Hague.

The successful candidate will add great value to the current team of four legal counsels, who have more general experience, and make the team stronger.


Job Profile for Legal Counsel
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Develop solutions for legal issues, prepare legal opinions and advice accordingly
  • Work with (internal) clients to understand their requirements and recommend solutions that enable them to reach their business goals while complying with legal regulations
  • Assist the Chief Counsel in examining legal regulations and facts pertinent to legal related topics and/or issues
  • Communicate with the parent company, affiliate offices and the internal customers
  • Provide legal support to the company’s offices in the Netherlands, the company’s foreign offices, and affiliated companies
  • Review and advise the company’s Chief Counsel and operating organisations of current legislation and make recommendations regarding compliance with law, regulations and other pertinent regulations within the company’s areas of operations
  • Review and advise the Chief Counsel and the company’s operating organisations of legal documents, opinions, corporate policies and procedures, corporate rights and obligations, claims and litigation, contracts and agreements, and statutory or similar requirement
  • Collect relevant evidence, data and information in order to recommend solutions and coordinate communication with all parties involved
  • Cover for the Chief Counsel in his absence and manage the affairs of the department by acting as first line of contact for enquiries and matters brought to the Chief Counsel
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as directed by the Chief Counsel

Candidate Profile for Legal Counsel

  • Must be fluent in English, both written and spoken. Proficiency in another language in which the company conducts significant operations is an advantage
  • Law degree from a reputable university
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience within a reputable private practice
  • A total of 10+ years of relevant international experience with a strong law firm, large corporation focused on compliance, taxation, contracting or other as mentioned under ‘Areas of Specialisation and Interest’ (listed below)
  • Required to currently be licensed, admitted to practice law and a member of a BAR association (preferably US, UK or Dutch)
  • Strong knowledge of structuring transactional documents
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to provide concise and clear support to internal clients
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and exercise sound judgment
  • Areas of specialisation and interest:
    • Compliance; Trade compliance classifications, Data Privacy and Anti-trust Law
    • Corporate Tax; Cross-jurisdiction and Permanent establishment
    • Contracting; EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) related work, JV (Joint Venture) related work and Procurement of Materials and services
    • Inter-company Agreement; Employment Agreement (placement and secondment)
    • Corporate Governance
